Crumble is a classic pudding you can enjoy all year and one you can enjoy instead of Christmas Pudding on Christmas Day. It’s not that I don’t like Xmas Pudding. I’m actually a fan, but can seldom manage to eat any after a big Christmas dinner. This was the same for most of the family and we found that much of our Xmas Pudding was going to waste.
So, a couple of years ago I tried making a Christmas Crumble and we haven’t looked back.
How to Make Christmas Crumble
Lighter but still as a tasty as a Xmas pudding a Christmas Crumble is quick and easy to make.
Vegan, vegetarian and dairy-free, it can be prepped early and popped in the oven to easily cook while you are eating your Christmas Dinner.
Ingredients for Christmas Crumble
- 400g Dried mixed fruit – apricots, dates, cherries, cranberries, sultanas (you can also use up mincemeat in this recipe)
- 100ml Fruit juice - orange or apple
- 150g Plain Flour
- 75g Oats - these make the topping crunchy
- 75g Margarine (I use Vitalite so the Christmas Crumble is vegan)
- 50g Sugar (brown or white)
- I tsp cinnamon
Method for Christmas Crumble
- Set over to Gas Mark 5 or 190C/170C
- Chop the dried fruit and gently warm in the fruit juice until slightly softened I get the boys to help with the chopping.
- Transfer to an oven dish you can sprinkle with sugar at this stage if you wish.
- Then make the crumble top. Rub the margarine and flour together until they look like rough breadcrumbs. Stir in the oats, cinnamon and sugar.
- Cover the fruit with the crumble topping and bake for 25 minutes
- Serve with custard, white sauce or ice cream – dairy or dairy-free.
What 'alternatives' dishes do you make at Christmas time?
