It's September. I can't quite believe the boys go back to school this week and the summer holidays are over but that doesn't stop there being plenty of opportunities to get out and about in the northeast and enjoy some free family fun and activities. If you are looking to find out what's on this month for families here in the North East don't forget the Great Exhibition of the North is still on until September 9 and we've found these great events happening too. Free Family Fun in the North East this September


The Extraordinary Garden

Saturday 1 – Sunday 2 September, 11am-5pm
Performance Square, Gateshead

An interactive inflatable Garden comes to Gateshead – walk through giant vibrant inflatable plants, meet a few ladybirds, watch the flowers grow and take a peek inside a few crazy creations. Garden themed street theatre including Bell and Bullock’s ‘No Flies on UZZZ’ and Fairly Famous Family ‘Strolling Gardeners’ will be performing to make you giggle in the garden. Free – just drop in.

Durham City HockeyFest 2018

Saturday 1 September 12 noon – 4 pm (Juniors 12noon - 2pm and Adults 2pm - 4pm)
Maiden Castle, Durham

Join in on Saturday 1st September with the annual HockeyFest club day! Taking place at Maiden Castle, the day is open to all ages and playing abilities and is a great chance to give hockey a try! They'll be hosting a range of fun games and activities to suit everyone. As well as all the hockey they'll have fun for all the family with music, food and much much more!

Tees Dragon Boat Festival

Sunday September 2 10am - 4pm
Stockton Riverside, Tees Valley

The Dragons are coming to Stockton – have you got what it takes to “Race the Dragon”? The Tees Dragon Boat Festival will be held on Sunday 2 September at the River Tees Water Sports Centre.

Durham Orchid Show

Sunday 2 September 10am – 4pm
Josephine Butler College, Durham

Enjoy displays from Orchid Societies and the chance to buy orchids from a variety of specialist growers. Visitors are welcome to bring any of their own plants along to the show if they would like advice about them. There will also be cultural talks by guest speakers and plenty of opportunities to ask for guidance. Organised by Darlington and District Orchid Society, and with the support of Durham University, the show is a very popular and enjoyable event. Entry to the Orchid Show is free. Standard admission charges apply to the nearby Botanic Garden. Parking is available at Howlands Park & Ride.

Heritage Open Days 2018

September 6 - 9 & 13 – 16
Across North East England

Heritage Open Days are England's largest festival of history and culture, every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE.

Every September some 40,000 volunteers across England organise 5,000 events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It's your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore. GREAT NORTH RUN WEEKEND

Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 September

Ahead of the main event on Sunday, Newcastle and Gateshead quayside shows host to a spectacle of sporting events, including the Mini Great North Run, the pasta party and also the Great North CityGames.

Mini Great North Run

Saturday 9 September 9.40 am – 12 pm

Junior Great North Run

Saturday 9 September 12.20 pm – 4.30 pm
NewcastleGateshead Quayside

The Junior and Mini courses both start on the Newcastle side of the River and take the young runners across to Gateshead via the Swing Bridge. The Juniors have a slightly extended version that loops along the river, but both the Juniors and the Minis will cross back across the Gateshead Millennium Bridge towards the finish line on the Newcastle side.


Great City Games

Saturday 8 September 2018

An established highlight in an action-packed sporting weekend, the Great North CityGames is staged the day before Britain’s biggest running event, the Simplyhealth Great North Run.
Crowds of over 25,000 enjoy this incredible annual spectacle on the banks of the Tyne, which sees world-class athletes from around the globe compete alongside the very best of home-grown talent.

With a range of events on offer from 100m sprints to the one-mile distance in a specially constructed multi-sports arena on the banks of the Tyne and in Stockton-on-Tees, the Great North CityGames kicks off a weekend of first-class sporting action which encompasses the Simplyhealth Junior and Mini Great North Run, the Simplyhealth Great North 5k and finishes with the world-famous Simplyhealth Great North Run on Sunday.

Great North Run

Sunday 10 September
Newcastle to South Shields

The Great North Run route goes through the centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne with runners crossing the Tyne Bridge on the Quayside and into Gateshead, ending in South Shields.

The Great North Run is one of the largest sporting events in the UK and one of the biggest races in the world. Taking place annually since its inception 1981, the race is a half-marathon which starts in the centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne and moves through the neighbouring borough of Gateshead towards South Tyneside. The finish line is located in South Shields on the North East Coast.

Seaham Military Fun Day

Friday 14 September from 6.45pm
Seaham, County Durham

Brought to you by Seaham 'Remember Them' armed forces charity.  Join us on Terrace Green, Seaham to watch the superb military precision of every march and enjoy the atmosphere from the military bands for the last event of the summer season. There will be craft and gift stalls, charity stalls, children’s rides and a whole host of hot and tasty street food.

Washington Carnival

Saturday, September 15, 2018
Albany Park, Washington

Head along to Albany Park in Washington and celebrate this fantastic family fun day. Heritage displays and information, Banner Groups, Fun Fair, Performers throughout the day, Food and Craft stalls, family activities. The Event will commence with a celebration parade through Concord to Albany Park at 9:45 am.

Diesel Day

Sunday 23 September, 11am - 4pm
Stephenson Railway Museum, North Tyneside

It's not all about steam! Passenger and freight trains are being hauled by our diesel locomotives today.  The Waggonway Tea Room will be open and local ukulele band, Bay Uke will be performing railway-themed songs. A free event, charge for heritage train rides

Festival of Thrift

Saturday 22 & Sunday 23 September 2018 10am – 5pm
Kirkleatham, Redcar & Cleveland

The award-winning Festival of Thrift shows you how to live sustainably with style. It's a big weekend of activities designed for all the family. Showing you how to save money, be environmentally savvy and live a rich and creative life. Leading and emerging artists, demonstrations, stalls, talks & workshops offering thrifty advice, tips and tricks as well as innovative tasty food and drink.

The festival has won a multitude of awards since starting out, including Best Event Teesside (in 2015 and 2017), Gold as North East Tourism Event of the Year and the Observer Ethical Awards for Arts and Culture, recognising the fact that artists are embedded in the programme as agents for social change.
