I have loved taking photographs for as long as I can remember. I’m not so keen on being in front of the camera mind you, much more comfortable behind the lens. I’m lucky to have travelled to lots of places where I’ve been able to take photographs that have created great memories for me. Here are five of my favourite places around the world to take photographs, I wonder where I’ll go next.
My 5 Favourite Places to Photograph
I took an A-level in photography, long after leaving school, but just as digital cameras were starting to take off. However I still learned how to operate in a dark room – it’s very difficult – but I learned a lot about using a camera and photography in the process. I often think about using film again, however, digital cameras are so convenient and now that many cameras connect directly to wifi it’s even easier - find out how to Connect your Lumix Camera to wifi.
And here is the picture I created Hockney style out of many photographs with my old SLR for my A'level exam.
My three trusted cameras
- Canon Digital SLR
I had a Canon SLR with a selection of lenses so it made sense to keep with Canon when I upgraded to a DSLR.
- Panasonic Lumix
This is my halfway house camera. I don’t always want to carry around a DSLR and lenses so a few years ago I received a Panasonic Lumix as a Christmas present. I still use it so much. It takes video and stills, can be fully automatic or manual and has some great settings too. I even dropped it once and it still works perfectly.
- iPhone
I’ve taken some of my favourite pictures on my iPhone – so quick and easy, whip it out of your pocket, point and click and you are done.
My Top Places Around the World to Take Photos
It's a very hard choice and I can't believe I've not included Easter Island, Sydney, Bora Bora, Barcelona and Rio, but after narrowing it down here are my top 5 with my 5 favourite pics from each place.
Peru
As well as loving Paddington Bear I had always wanted to visit Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca after seeing Michael Palin on TV there many years ago. It didn’t disappoint and with the high altitude, strong sunlight and unpolluted skies it turns out that its one of the best places to take photographs.
Scottish Highlands
Last year we took a trip to Loch Ness and travelled around the Scottish Highlands. I took all three cameras with me and took thousands of photographs – there are too many to have a favourite but here are some of my most loved.
New York
I’ve been to New York three times and on each occasion, it's been different. A first-weekend break where we took in all the tourist sights. A second time for work, and a third to celebrate a friend birthday. The last time I went I took lots of photos on film for my A’level projects – love how the ice rink one looks a little like a Lowry painting!
South Africa
I’ve been on safari twice. In Kenya, then South Africa, Botswana and Zambia. I absolutely love it. Seeing the fantastic wildlife in their natural environments beats going to a zoo any day. Leopards, lions, elephants, hippos, rhinos, giraffes, and zebras – all amazing and make great models too. I struggled to pick just 5 though from this amazing place ... but here we go.
Newcastle-upon-Tyne
I love my hometown. Sometimes people are too busy to take notice of what surrounds them every day but I’m lucky enough to live just a mile from the Millennium Bridge, Tyne Bridge, Grey Street and Grey’s Monument. And I have thousands of photographs too that I’ve taken over the past twenty years. Here are some of my favourites.

Wow you have been to some wonderful places
ReplyDeleteThanks. I know I am really lucky, but there are still so many places on my bucket list too ...
DeleteI found Costa Rica a great place for photography. Sri Lanka was also rewarding for travel photos.
ReplyDeleteBoth places I'd still love to travel to.
