Well, it's May Bank Holiday Monday today, and what a scorcher of a weekend it has been. Hopefully, the rest of May will bring us, even more, warmer and longer sunny days to enjoy.
May is not only the fifth month of the year but also gives us two bank holidays plus a week of school holidays too and it really starts to get warmer, lighter and we all start feeling better. So here are seven things to do with and without the family, to eat, make and also enjoy in May.
7 Things To Do In May
Where to go ...
Hot air balloons will once again fill the Durham City skyline for the return of a free family-friendly hot air balloon festival at the end of this month. In a few weeks’ time, when you look to the skies above Durham City, it will be awash with brightly coloured balloons. The horizon will be lit up with hot air balloons galore, as a weekend of spectacular Spring Bank Holiday family fun, from Friday 25 May until Monday 28 May, comes to Durham. And don't forget all of the FREE family events and activities taking place this month and our A-Z of FREE family attractions in North East England.
What to plan ...
Christmas may be along time off, but tickets are now on sale for The Snowman when it returns to Durham Cathedral at the end of this year. Read all about last years show and keep following - we'll have an amazing competition to win a free family ticket to the show later in the year on Friday 28 December.
What to book ...
Penguinpig is coming to Gateshead in June. A cautionary but beautiful story about the internet is told with puppets and is made for families ideally with children aged between 3 & 8 years old. Tickets are now on sale for the e-safety themed theatre show ‘Penguinpig’, a live puppet show based on the best-selling picture book by Stuart Spendlow, illustrated by Amy Bradley, where the little characters are brought to life in 3D, with voices, dance moves and gorgeous songs.
Where to stay ...
At the Heart of Hadrian's Wall, Roman Britain comes to life! As well as the Hadrian's Wall Trail, there are amazing Roman Forts such as Vindolanda and Housesteads, fantastic countryside and a wealth of accommodation too. We were invited to review some new luxury B&B lodges close to Hadrian’s Wall, aptly named Hadrian’s Holiday Lodges. In fact, they are just 120 metres off the Hadrian’s Wall Trail.
What to make ...
Peanut butter is so popular in many countries. It’s also very popular with my boys. Peanut butter is a food paste or spread made from ground peanuts. It often contains additional ingredients that enhance the taste or texture, such as salt, sweeteners or emulsifiers. However, you can avoid these additives if you make your own peanut butter at home. And it’s so easy to do. You don’t need much more than peanuts and a blender and gives you a massive saving on the shop bought versions of the spread.
What to save ...
Did you know that in the UK we throw away over 7 million tonnes of food every year? That’s nearly 20% of what we actually buy going into our bins. Some of this food will have sadly gone off, but what’s worse is that according to research by WRAP, more than half (4.4 million tonnes) of this food that ends up in our waste collection, could still have been eaten, which equates to around 13 billion ‘5 a day’ portions.
Food waste can be minimised, and in this post, I’m highlighting some of the ways that I’m trying to cut down on my food waste and I’m sharing some other peoples really great family-friendly ideas too. We haven't eliminated food waste in our house, but we are trying our best. Here you can read how to reduce food waste - helping to save you money and saving the planet.
What to listen to ...
Spring has definitely arrived so let's find some springtime songs to match the weather. The only problem is there are so many to choose from! Frank Sinatra's 'Spring is here' or 'It might as well be spring'; or Beach Boys 'There hearts were full of Spring'; Sait Etienne's 'Spring' or shall we go for The Kinks 'Suny Afternoon' or hopefully not tempt fate with 'Here Comes The Sun'.
Have a great month of May!
