***REVIEW***
Adventure golf has come to Newcastle. In the former Co-op Department Store building on Newgate Street, in Newcastle City Centre, sandwiched between Zaap Thai and the Premier Inn, you’ll find Mr Mulligan’s Space Golf.
I’m going to be honest when I first heard’ Space Golf’ I really didn’t know what to expect. But after meeting up with Adventure Leisure in the autumn, and hearing about their plans for adventure golf in the city, I knew it would be something my boys would love. So when we were asked to go along and review the first Space Golf after it opened during half-term in Newcastle, my boys didn’t need asking twice.
Adventure Golf
For adventure golf, think crazy golf, but indoors, creatively designed and lots of fun. It’s a central location, easily accessible by public transport as well as close to main car parks. It’s indoors which means it a great rainy day activity. It is fun for all the family as well as having a late night bar to cater for groups of adults too.
Mr Mulligan's Space Golf is accessed straight from Newgate Street, on arrival you’ll pass some space golf buggies which really set the scene for the entire venue.
I love the creative graffiti style artwork that welcomes you. This is then continued throughout the golf courses creating a bright, fun, vibrant feel – a far cry away from traditional crazy golf courses.
There are also many lockers, coin-operated, in which you can store your coat and belongings making the whole indoor experience more enjoyable, especially in winter when we all had thick coats, hats and gloves. Not having to carry these around was brilliant.
When booking or at the reception desk you can choose whether to play 9, 18 or 27 holes. There are three different 9-hole courses in total: Lunar Crash, Cosmic Storm and the Inventors Hangar.
None are too hard but all have a different design. The focus is definitely on fun rather than difficulty. We tried each of the courses with our 27 goes but you can opt to do any, although Lunar Crash is less complicated than the other two. Our favourite was definitely Inventors Hangar but they are all good.
Lunar Crash
Cosmic Storm
Inventors Hangar
It's a simple process to start playing, you pick a club and a golf ball - just make sure you all pick a different colour - and pick your course. At the end of hole 9 each time the ball is retained. but don't worry you just exchange a token for a new ball for your next round. Pick up a scorecard too and a pencil so you can keep track of who is winning.
Each course took us approximately 35-45 minutes to complete. It was busy, we visited on a Sunday lunchtime, but entries are staggered by the timeslot system meaning there should never be more than 100 people playing at any one time. There were people ahead and behind us but not enough to cause traffic jams and backlogs. You can also take drinks around with you, and servers will also take your order and bring you your drinks whilst you are on the course.
In addition to the golf, there is also a bar and restaurant. I was really impressed with the food. It’s not a huge menu but one with an adequate choice that includes pasta, pizza, burgers and salads as well as a kids menu. There are also a few starters and desserts too. Plenty of veggie options too. The prices I thought were really reasonable too for venue catering.
I chose the green salad with halloumi cheese. It was a big bowl of fresh salad, with a tasty dressing and topped with grilled halloumi and I‘d happily eat it again. Surprisingly filling too, for a salad. Hubby opted for the Red Mist pasta, my eldest chose the Carolina Masters burger which came with bacon and cheese toppings and fries, whilst my youngest picked Chicken Goujons – his favourite meal is chicken nuggets! Everyone was very happy with their choices. And all were really good quality meals.
RED MIST £6.95 Freshly prepared tagliatelle pasta with peppers and onions in a rustic tomato sauce, accompanied by garlic bread.
GREEN JACKET £6.25 Mixed leaf salad, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, red onion and olives with a honey and mustard dressing. with Halloumi + £2.00
CAROLINA MASTERS £6.50 - 6 oz beef burger topped with bacon, cheese, iceberg lettuce,
tomato and burger relish.
CHICKEN GOUJONS £5.95 100% chicken goujons with fries and a choice of peas or beans.
The kid's meal comes with ice-cream, and there are an additional four desserts on the menu plus sundaes. We tried the fudge cake and the Armstrong toffee pudding. The fudge cake was really good but I also I had to try hubby’s portion of toffee pudding as a former ‘Armstrong’. Both really tasty too.
MR M FUDGE CAKE £3.25 Rich chocolate fudge cake, accompanied by cream
ARMSTRONG TOFFEE PUDDING £4.25 Hot sticky toffee sponge accompanied by custard.
For drinks we had coffees and the boys opted for thirst quenching slushies but there is a full range of alcoholic beverage available too, again at fairly reasonable prices.
We received our meals complimentary but the bill for 3 adult meals and a child’s meal plus desserts and drinks was just over £41 – so around £10 each. The portion sizes were very generous too. The food itself, really well presented, tasted fresh and delicious and the service was excellent.
We dined between our second and third goes of golf, and in total our stay was around 3 hours, making it a really fun family time. So who won? Well, I took the first two courses with a steady pace, even hole in ones by hubby and my eldest couldn't beat me, but hubby came back to win the final 9 holes, finishing in style with another hole in one!

Well, the smiles on the boys' faces say it all. I'm very impressed with a venue that can cater for audiences from young family, teens and tweens right through to party nights, plus children's and corporate bookings too. No it's not cheap but it is comparable to other family activities such as bowling, cinema, trampoline parks etc. and this one involves the whole family in an activity they can all enjoy, together. I think we will definitely be returning!
