Getting Crafty With The Kids - Glow Putty

My Boys really do enjoy creating new things. When they were younger they loved things like Play-Doh. Now they are slightly older but they still like squishing things, making noises and getting their hands dirty. I don’t always like the mess, however.

Earlier this year my youngest was bought a Glow in the Dark putty set as a present. We recently found it on a house tidy up day and it turned out to be the perfect children’s activity for a cold, rainy day in November.

When we opened the box of Crazy Aaron's Mixed By Me Thinking Putty Kit, it contained five small tins of putty (clear), three colour concentrates and three special effects, colouring pencils, sticky labels and an instruction booklet which doubled as a mixing sheet.

The putty comes in 5 separate small tins – we actually only used one on this first go, so I think it will provide a few more afternoons worth of activity. Then there are three colour concentrates in the primary colours of red, blue and yellow – so you can then make any colour you want, and three different special effects – shimmer, sparkle and glow (and yes it really does glow in the dark).

The idea is to mix the putty, to create the suggested mixtures or you can develop your own new concoctions. You have a fair chance of making something unique. You can then give it a name if you wish and write it on a new label (supplied) with the pencils (supplied).

My boys couldn't wait to mix their own colours. The boys got stuck in straight away checking out the putty, taking the colours and effects out of their packets and rolling them into balls.

Then came the fun part mixing. They said it was like elastic, you pull it a little to shape it, but if you pull it hard it snaps in two.

They started by following the instructions but it wasn’t long before they let their imaginations go and started to create their own combinations. They worked together as a team deciding what to make but didn’t want my help.

All in all, they entertained themselves for a couple of hours mixing and stretching the putty before deciding one final creation – a giant swirl. This was the only time they asked for some assistance.

They then placed it on the bookshelf in their bedroom so they could check overnight whether it really glowed in the dark. It did :)

I had been prepared for this to be messy, cleared the kitchen table, put down wipeable mats but to my surprise, there was no mess.

I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a stress reliever as it can be quite therapeutic. They spent all afternoon mixing the various colours and effects to create a spiral effect. Their only disappointment was that as it never actually goes hard it's no good for modelling with. If anyone knows of any mix your own putty that can then be modelled please let me know.

When it was bought the complete kit cost just under £15, including delivery, from an online retailer. It has been a great pressie.

Cost: £14.95 at the time of purchase.
Time: Lots of rainy afternoons
Equipment: Just the kit.
My Boys Club Rating: It’s a great kit nurturing their creativity in a fun and practical (and not too messy) way.

It was lots of fun!

Thanks for reading,
